Windows 95

Windows 3.11 Compatibility

Getting older apps to work in Win95

If you're still using some older programs from your Windows 3.11 days and they're messing up or going slowly, you may be able to "tune" them so that they'll work with Windows 95 or 98.

Go to Run... and type mkcompat.exe

You get a window running a program called Make Compatible, which gives you all kinds of little options you can tweak.

Click File then Choose Program... and decide what program you want to work on. Once it opens, go back to File and choose Advanced Options. You'll see a WHOLE bunch of things you can change, though some of them may not mean anything to you :)

Good luck!

Do you miss the old Program Manager or File Manager?

Well, they're still there. From the Start/Run dialog enter "winfile.exe" to launch the File Manager, or "progman.exe" to launch the Program Manager.

System Editor . . .

Remember "sysedit.exe" from Windows 3.x? It is also still there, and is a convenient way to access your config.sys, autoexec.bat, win.ini, system.ini, and several other system files.

Do you miss Windows 3.11?

If you are using Windows 95 and you want the old Windows 3.11 interface, follow these steps:

1) click on the Start button

2) highlight Run

3) type "program" (don't type the quotes) in the Open box and hit Enter

4) Windows 3.11 before your eyes! (well, close enough!)
