Improving file handling after system crashes

Sick of getting file errors whenever you crash? Let's face it, computers with any Windows OS WILL inevitably crash every so often . . . the most important thing is to make sure your files remain intact. I have found that the following method has greatly increased the reliability of my file system.

Go to the System properties by pressing ALT and double-clicking on My Computer, or right-clicking on My Computer and selecting Properties, or pressing the Windows and Pause keys. Select Performance and then File System. Change the Typical role of this computer to Network Server. This improves the reliability of file handling.

Find out what's running in the background . . .

Wondering what's running in the background? Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del once to get a list of the tasks running under Windows 95. If you're getting sluggish performance or your hard drive is getting trampled and you don't know why, check out the tasks you're running once in a while, and you may find something running that's doing you more harm than good.

Task Manager . . .

Type "taskman.exe" from the Start/Run dialog--this resembles the old Windows 3.x task manager. Or hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete (careful--once only!) to bring up the Windows 95 task manager. This is often the only way to close an errant or hung program.
