Moving text
in and out of BeOS
Handling text between several OSes can be a problem. There are several standards for the end-of-line character. So you don't see those weird characters pop up at the end of your line, get programs like convert or CRconverter of bebits. Another handy tool is ToLower, which changes the filenames of whole batches of files to lowercase. submitted by: Mark J. Just put the font files (ending in a .TTF extension) into the /boot/home/config/fonts/ttfonts directory. If you have Windows installed on your PC and don't want to have two copies of your fonts around, start up the Terminal app and type: ln -s /{name-of-your-windows-partition}/WINDOWS/FONTS /boot/home/config/fonts/ttfonts Then use my RescanFonts program (downloadable from BeBits) to make sure the fonts are made available at system startup. submitted by: Heber Ellsworth posted: 12/31/99 How much memory do you need for Be? Make sure that you don't run out of drive space while using Be. The system can lock up on you and you will lose whatever you were working on. Be Inc. recommends a 500 MB partition and it is a good idea to have that much space or more. Having plenty of RAM helps out a lot. Just because Be will run with only 16 MB of RAM does not mean that you will like it. 32 MB to 48 MB is nice. 64 MB is even better. submitted by: Wildman posted: 12/31/99 Cool tool for Be networking The program WON (World of Networking) acts like the Windows 98 Network Neighborhood. If your BeOS system is on a network give it a try. WON is still in beta so there might be a few bugs or it might not work for you at all. You should not have any problems with it if you have a fully-supported network card.
submitted by: Wildman posted: 12/31/99 Saving space When you install Be you have the option to install Optional Components and 3rd Party software. Those files can eat up hard drive space, so consider not installing them with Be because you can still get the files that you want off of the BeOS CD-ROM.
